The Options data centre is one of a cluster of data centres in Acton (click on map to open in Google maps). It stand just north of the Powergate business park, which is home to Telecity Powergate 1, Telecity Powergate 2 and Colt Powergate.
Directly opposite the national grid substation (below), and alongside the Grand Union Canal, a handy reminder that often the internet follows (or mirrors) existing infrastructure.
This relatively small data centre opened in 2008. According to colo-x Options decided to locate here due to “access to fibre, power and good transport links to central London (Barkerloo line at Harlesden Station giving 35 minutes access to Piccadilly Station), or 18 minutes to Euston via overground”. Again expressing the importance of physical infrastructure.
More than any other data centre I have visited so far, this building has a extremely visible security presence. Along with high fences topped with barbed wire the building has numerous security cameras and a huge number of warning signs. There are also concrete bollards to stop ram raiding and floodlights all around the building.
