The Colt data centre was the first to open on the aptly named Powergate Business Park, with TeleCity’s Powergate 1 and 2 following in 2008 and 2012.
Located on the site of a former power station the data centres location was almost certainly determined by the location of a national grid substation directly to the north of the site (click on the map to open in Google maps).
The data centre occupies a converted light industrial shed. That unlike the two TeleCity data centres has not been reclad and maintains its original aesthetic of brick and corrugated steel.
The building is set behind a high security fence and protected by very visible security cameras.
A huge amount of cooling equipment occupies the former parking spaces in front of the building, with power units to beside the building nearest to the national grid substation (visible in the back ground in the image below).
The rear of the building backs onto a park. The high security and pipework is visible.
The site from the air. The Colt data centre is in the bottom right of the image.
